For [info]switchknife | Snape | I promise to write you something more Snape-y in the future & a bit of explanation

*

Three days after the Muggle Protection Act of 2004 is passed, the Wand-Snapping Decree goes into effect and so Severus Snape stands in line with the other British wizards and witches who were in his year, the Hogwarts class of 1971, ladies & gentlemen, Death Eaters and Order operatives and Aurors all coughing and shuffling and glaring next to one another, at the mercy of the alphabet. Straight off the Hogwarts rolls. The Downing Street spokesman even promised that Lord Voldemort would be called up as Riddle, Tom Marvolo as if the intervening years between the orphan boy and Dark Lord never happened. A little glitch in the universe that they’ve ironed out.

Nothing has changed.

They even call out the names of the dead.

“Avery, Wallace.”

A cold pause as the second Government official looks up from his tally list.

“Avery, Wallace. Deceased. Next.”

No marriages or new identities, the class of 1971 fresh out of Hogwarts.

Nothing has changed.

Indeed.

Severus smiles thinly; it is almost worth it just to see Bellatrix and Sirius in line next to each other. Their lips are both cut into sneers, and with the cold reddening their cheeks and lips and the looks of disgust plastered onto each of their faces they look far more alike than either of them would like to admit.

Severus is towards the end of the line with a scarf over his lips, holding his wand in shivering fingers. He’s not wearing gloves and the tips are alternately white-and-blue, but there’s still some feeling in his hands, the wood of his wand hums underneath his touch. He flinches every time someone is called forward; the one-two-three beat as they climb the three stairs to the makeshift altar capped by the harsh slithering snap of the wand.

All this to protect the Muggles.

“Black, Bellatrix.”

Of course, Bellatrix won’t go quite as easily as all that. She holds out her wand straight in front of her like she’s holding a fencing sword and raises her eyebrow and says, “Come for me, then” with that flair for the dramatic that made her so popular among the Death Eaters.

And they do, four men who clamp their filthy Muggle hands on her body and twist twist until the wand drops out of her fingers and she’s left limply clutching her arm. Her hair hangs over her face and she snarls. “Animals! Vermin!”

One of the Muggles slaps her around the face, but she opens her mouth ever so slightly and his knuckles scrape her teeth. She spits the blood from her mouth at the feet of the Government official with the list in his hands. “The Muggles will kill you all” she pronounces to the crowd, like a half-mad half-divine prophet. An ancient priestess who has lost her God. They push her up the stairs and hold her neck up so that she can watch as her wand is broken into two. They do not hand the pieces back to her.

“Black, Bellatrix. Check. Next.”

The list rustles.

“Black, Sirius.”

Severus watches as Sirius climbs the stairs and holds out his wand and bows his mangy head until the official reaches for his wand and then he snarls. The wand his at the man’s throat before he can speak and Sirius is pressing, pressing and whispering something like, “you can take my wand, but I could kill you with my bare hands”. That flair for the dramatic that made Sirius so popular with the Gryffindors.

Severus thinks: in this and many things they are brother and sister.

He wonders whether Sirius kisses like Bellatrix.

Cold and unforgiving, all teeth and wandering hands.

Fucker.

Severus’s fingers have gone numb; he cannot feel the wand resting against his palm. He tightens his grip and presses his thumb down on the tip, harder, harder until he smells rather than feels the blood drip down the length of wood. He presses his lips together and they form a pale white line against his paler face.

Sirius, being the impulsive fool that he is, makes the mistake of trying to cast a jinx, but the Dampening Spell that hangs in the air like a fog throws the magic back at him and he’s lying on the floor twitching and whimpering.

The Government official picks up his list with shaking fingers and leans over to his colleague. He forgets that there is a microphone clipped to his lapel and so the entire crowd hears the word as he whispers it, feels a chill run through them. “Azkaban,” he says, and Sirius writhes against the guards. Bellatrix lifts her head just a little higher but Severus fancies that her eyes are glistening. But perhaps it is just the light.

His colleague nods. “Azkaban,” he agrees.

The Muggles have always been so adept at taking what they need from Wizarding culture.

They put handcuffs on Bellatrix and Sirius; the police car arrives ten, maybe fifteen minutes later.

The Muggles lead them out just as the man shuffles his papers and calls out, “Evans, Lily.”

Sirius turns his head to search the crowd, looking for Lupin, perhaps, but instead he finds Severus. The stare at each other for a cold, even moment.

“Evans, Lily. Deceased. Next.”

Nothing has changed.

The policeman shoves Sirius roughly towards the car.

The wand is slippery in Severus’s hands.

He wonders what he will do when his name is called.

I hate the fucking Muggles now. I HATE THEM.

You know, this fic appeals to me on so many different levels, I can't muster an adequate review. Probably the best I've read by you.

First, the matter-of-fact tone - leaves me absolutely horrified. You are brilliant handling the unspoken, the motives and fears that never reach the tongue: Snape's bleeding hand, I could just feel it.

Secondly, the parallels between Bellatrix and Sirius. A wonderful touch, am at a loss of words.

Thirdly, the "nothing has changed". Your dystopic worlds yank the reader inside and close, and the characters truly become flesh and blood. I can see Sirius twitching on the floor and feel each panicked though that passes through his mind.

Once you said your characters are subjugated to the plot; in this case I feel, you've found the absolute balance. They are playing for the same goal.

It's been a long time since a fic has actually had me enthralled and close to tears at the ending. (Not only because it's not a happyshiny ending, but because it's over). This did that. Saved me the trouble of writing my Evil Snape/Hermione Fic, too, for which the world will thank you one day.

Oh man, that physically hurt. It's like the Snape fic I fell in love with in my heady first days in fandom. The images and events were so vivid, and I just wanted to tell Severus to get the hell out of that line before they came for him...

I want to ask if that stands alone or if you plan to add more, but I'm not sure I could handle much more in this universe...

Ahahaha. No, man. You must write the Snape/Hermione. It's like crack. It just has to be done.

And-- well, I have a little universe in my head & snippets, but I don't know if I'll end up writing it. I guess it really depends. So for now, it does stand alone, but I won't discount the possibility of a future addition. <3.

... Right. Now that I have... calmed down. Relatively. Let me say that what struck me the most was the TRUTH of this--that is to say, the parallels it bears to RL phenomena such as ethnic cleansing, and how quickly the tables are turned. The victims end up becoming the aggressors, in history, and do not have any qualms about practicing the same injustices that were practiced upon them. Similarly, the aggressors are soon faced with the same fate that they once subjected others to. One might call it justice, except for the very obvious fact that there is nothing just about it at ALL. On either side of the equation. And that's what makes the inescapability of it all the more appalling.

A little glitch in the universe that they've ironed out.

This made me laugh somewhat sharply--yes, it IS that self-delusion, isn't it? Witness the United States. *shakes head* As though rewriting history will be tantamount to changing it--well, I suppose it IS, given enough time--but not now, not now, not now.

What an absolutely bleak, horrifying, desperate scenario you paint here. I can hear the shuffling feet, feel the sweat under my collar at the thought of being called up next. I can feel the wand slippery with fear in my hands. The light-headedness of desperation. Oh my God. This was so genuine that it made me sick with the reality of it--to lose one's magic--to lose one's--

No. No. (See? So much for coherence.)

My initial IHATEMUGGLES reaction was symptomatic of the same stupidity that produced this situation in the first place, but that only proves how true and convincing your story is. ;)

Gorgeous, gorgeous work. AND YOU SAID YOU COULDN'T WRITE SNAPE?! You sweet liar, you. (Okay, this is more politics than Snape, but Snape himself is politics to a large degree.)

Love you, love you, love you. Your Lockhart is on the way. *bites nails*

Oh, wow. Hon. Your reviews make me want to tie you to a bed and...*coughs*. Well. Suffice to say that if I ever managed to tie you to a bed, much illegality would ensue.

And yes, this is my way of writing Snape-- by *gasp* not writing him at all, really. Though I thought that my narrative was a bit more Snape-y that usual, because I generally avoid judgements or opinions or little side authorial notes in the narrative, and somehow Snape brings that out of you. He makes you want to pick out every little flaw in the universe and go on a ten minute rant about each one. *G*

But, yeah. On your 'I hate Muggles' reaction-- well, so do I, most of the time. We're a brutal, blundering & cruel lot, really, and I think if the existence of a WW really was revealed we would react with fear & scorn & distrust. Though, perhaps I've just been watching too much Dark Angel (a show I highly recommend, btw-- you actually have a *gaspshockhorror* lesbian character that fears not to hit on women!* and it's all with the dystopia & such. I think you'd like)

But this universe is tres addictive-- I already have this little scene at Hogwarts running in my head with Hermione (being Muggleborn & one of the few the Muggles trusted) lining up all her old professors in the Transfiguration classroom or the great hall and walking down the line looking at each one of them, her heels clicking on the flagstones. Mwah. *has been infected*

And, I look forward muchly to the Lockhart. I'm sure it'll be brilliant. <3333.

Wow! Such a bleak scenario painted with more shades of grey then there could be. So beautiful and yet so real.

Reminds me of the Holocaust in a way. The scenario is wonderfully real and that's what hurts the most, that it COULD happen. That the Muggles become more powerful then the Wizards and then the wizards die out. Just wonderful.

I can sense a revolt and resurgence of primitive magic coming in later years though, if the wizards marry muggles. But, how would the muggles cope with magic without a wand? Very haunting.

Ouch. "Your talent harms me in my inability." That sort of thing always hurts to read about.

I liked the Bellatrix/Sirius comparison. Loved "Nothing has changed" and "He wonders what he will do when his name is called." I liked that they didn't all go quietly, good guys or bad. That they were all the same to the new authorities, no matter what side they had been on.

oh god, oh god.

this fic is horrifyingly brutal and real that leaves no space for feelings or emotions; it's so cold and there is no hope at all in it. The little details caught me the most, like Sirius trying to escape, and how there isn't even blood or broken bones (that we know of) to speak for his troubles; he's just there on the floor, writhing like a child. And the name calling just gave me that sick feeling like you get when you know you're in trouble and there's no way out.

in short, fuck, that tore my heart out.

what is interesting is to see someone effectively making the point that voldemort is making, and make it look reasonable. of course you're not advocating such violent means of ensuring this situation doesn't come about as he is, but saying that this is what many/most purebloods fear goes a long way to explaining why people become death eaters.

i object to those who're comparing the events you write about here to the holocaust. the muggles aren't killing witches and wizards, just stopping them do much magic. (incidentally i would see the likely continuation of this being the development of wandless magic - an ability they all have, after all). they still live, they can still have children (with, presumably, magical potential). it's equivalent to stopping jews going to synagogue and practicing their religion, rather than killing them. proportion, please.

On the Holocaust thing-- certainly not. As you mentioned-- proportion. In my opinion, the infringements here are enough to warrant outrage-- you don't have to murder people for what you do to be wrong, but there is a world of a difference between taking away certain rights and killing people.

As far as the making-Voldemort's-point goes-- I always thought that he did have something of a point. And I think it's something that's accepted by the majority of the wizarding population as well, otherwise Dumbledore would be advocating a rapprochement with the Muggle world along with equality & fairness. I think that the WW's many 'hiding' mechanisms (the houses that fit into each other, the streets that have hidden entrances etc.) are significant in the sense that they reveal the Wizarding mindset-- you only really hide from someone that you fear, at least in part. Even Voldemort doesn't really seem to want the joining of the two worlds, even in the sense of making Muggles slaves/an inferior race, despite the fact that it would fit with the DE ideology, such that there is. And that seems to indicate to me that he thinks that Wizards will be unable to dominate, because if they could, I doubt he'd have many qualms about it.

An alternative view, though, is that it is, in a sense, revenge on the part of the Muggles for the injustices the WW has perpetuated on them over the centuries. Mass obliviations, being convenient cannon fodder in wars, the duping and trickery practiced on such a grand scale by a small minority over the large minority-- these are sorts of things that cultures tend to demonise.

*coughs*

Talk about getting long-winded.

[BTW, I love the pic of you in the dress on your flats journal. Though, of course, I knew that you're pretty even before I saw it. <3.]

Do you realize you have my soul? Because this was bloody amazing. The tension, the inherent cruelty, the truth of the words, it's all like a shiver down my spine that won't go away. Because, despite how we would like to think that Muggles would be willing to live in peace with the wizards, there's been historical evidence showing exactly that this kind of thing would happen instead: Internment and death and an. an end. And oh god. Bellatrix and Sirius and Snape.

I love you. Seriously. oh, I get blown away whenever I read something of yours. <333333

This chills me. The roll of names reminds me uncomfortably of the registering of animagi and werewolves with the Ministry of Magic (or other such real-world lists, since my own forebears were detained in camps during WWII), and the power that such a list can have-- and it's so much worse that the list comes from Hogwarts, an institution that's supposed to foster, educate, and protect the young of Wizard-kind. Without magic, they're all just names on a list, and dead or alive is just a property of each name.

Reiterating what others have said, the parallel between Sirius and Bellatrix is wonderful. What particularly struck me was Snape's stray thought about their kisses, and how his flash of anger at Sirius outcaps his anger at the whole process. His acquiescence to this horrible scene, grimly evaluating the players with no apparent plan of escape, makes the whole situation horribly bleak.

Gorgeous, thought-provoking writing.
